A Record-Size Catrina for Mexico City's Day of the Dead

1Mexico City plans to show a 32-meter Catrina, the elegant skeleton lady of the Day of the Dead, in its main square from October 29. City officials announced the figure on October 20. They said they hope it will set a Guinness World Record for the tallest Catrina.

2The current record is held by a 28-meter Catrina that was built in the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta in 2023. Mexico City's figure is being made of cartoneria, a kind of papier-mache. It will be the center of a huge offering, or ofrenda, in the Zocalo from October 29 to November 2.

3The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1 and 2. Families honor relatives who have died, often by building ofrendas at home or at graves. Many families put candles, the dead person's favorite foods and marigolds, known as cempasuchil, on the altars.

4The Catrina comes from a work by the Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada. His etching from around 1910 showed a female skeleton wearing makeup and elegant clothes. It was meant to criticize Mexicans who copied European fashions. Today, the Catrina is one of the best-known symbols of the holiday.

5On October 31, the city will also hold its Grand Day of the Dead Parade, which will end at the Zocalo. The parade was first held in 2016, a year after the James Bond film Spectre came out. The movie's opening scene showed a Day of the Dead parade in the city. At the time, Mexico's tourism minister said such a parade had never been held in real life.

Mexico City's figure is being made of cartoneria, a kind of papier-mache.
