A Giant Skeleton for the Day of the Dead

1Mexico City is going to show a skeleton figure that is 32 meters tall. It is for the Day of the Dead. The city hopes it will be the tallest of its kind in the world.

2The figure is a Catrina, a skeleton woman in fancy clothes. Artists are making it from paper. It will stand in the city's main square from October 29 to November 2.

3The Day of the Dead is on November 1 and 2. In Mexico, families remember the people in their family who have died. They make altars with candles, food and flowers called marigolds.

4There will also be a big parade on October 31. The city started the parade in 2016. The idea came from a James Bond movie, Spectre. The movie showed a Day of the Dead parade in Mexico City.

全文訳

1メキシコ市は、高さ32メートルのガイコツの人形をかざる予定です。「死者の日」のためです。市は、同じような人形の中で世界一高くなることを願っています。

2この人形は「カトリーナ」で、おしゃれな服を着たガイコツの女性です。芸術家たちが、紙で作っています。10月29日から11月2日まで、市の中央広場に立ちます。

3死者の日は11月1日と2日です。メキシコでは、家族の中で亡くなった人たちのことを思い出します。ろうそくや食べ物、マリーゴールドという花で祭だんを作ります。

410月31日には大きなパレードもあります。市がこのパレードを始めたのは2016年です。もとになったのは、ジェームズ・ボンドの映画『007 スペクター』でした。その映画に、メキシコ市の死者の日のパレードが出てきたのです。

文法ポイント：最上級（the + -est + of / in ～）

「〜の中でいちばん…」を表す。本文の the tallest of its kind in the world は「世界で同じ種類のものの中でいちばん高い」。tall → tallest のように、短い形容詞は -est をつける。
