Mosquitoes Have Favorite People

1Scientists in the United States have found that different kinds of mosquitoes like different people. A team at Florida International University tested 119 volunteers.

2The team used three kinds of mosquitoes. Two kinds bite during the day, and one kind bites at night. For the two daytime kinds, each volunteer put an arm into a special box. The mosquitoes could smell the arm, but they could not bite it.

3Each kind of mosquito chose a different group of people. Nobody was the top choice for all three kinds.

4A person's smell comes from more than 1,000 chemicals. Tiny living things called bacteria also live on our skin. Some of them attracted all three kinds of mosquitoes.

5Mosquitoes can spread diseases such as dengue and Zika. The scientists say the results could one day help keep mosquitoes away from people.

文法ポイント:助動詞 can / could(~できる・~できた)

The mosquitoes could smell the arm, but they could not bite it. 現在のことは Mosquitoes can spread diseases のように can を使う。
