Mario Creator Becomes First Game Maker to Win Japan's Top Culture Honor

1Shigeru Miyamoto, the game designer behind Super Mario, will receive the Order of Culture, the Japanese government announced on Oct. 23. He is the first person to be chosen from the field of video games. Miyamoto, 73, has worked at Nintendo for nearly 50 years.

2The Order of Culture was created in 1937. It goes to people who have made major contributions to Japanese culture in areas like art and science. The government announces the new recipients each fall. The Emperor then presents the medals at the Imperial Palace on Nov. 3.

3Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 after studying industrial design at Kanazawa College of Art. He went on to lead the development of hit series such as Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. Super Mario Bros. came out in 1985 for the Family Computer. In 2019, he was named a Person of Cultural Merit, another national honor, and that was also a first for the game industry.

4Miyamoto spoke to reporters at Nintendo's head office in Kyoto on Oct. 22. He said the honor was the result of work he had done together with a large number of people. He said he was accepting it on behalf of them. He also said that as a junior high school student, he wanted to become a manga artist.

5Miyamoto was also asked about AI. He warned that because the work itself is fun, people can wrongly believe they have made something good.

1「スーパーマリオ」を生んだゲームデザイナーの宮本茂さんが文化勲章を受けると、日本政府が10月23日に発表しました。ゲームの分野から選ばれるのは、宮本さんが初めてです。73歳の宮本さんは、50年近く任天堂で働いてきました。

2文化勲章は1937年につくられました。芸術や科学などの分野で、日本の文化に大きく貢献した人に贈られます。政府は毎年秋に、新しく受ける人を発表します。そして11月3日に、天皇陛下が皇居で勲章を手わたします。

3宮本さんは金沢美術工芸大学で工業デザインを学んだあと、1977年に任天堂に入りました。その後、「ドンキーコング」「スーパーマリオブラザーズ」「ゼルダの伝説」などの人気シリーズの開発を引っぱりました。「スーパーマリオブラザーズ」は1985年にファミコン向けに発売されました。2019年には、国のもうひとつの栄誉である文化功労者に選ばれ、これもゲーム業界で初めてのことでした。

4宮本さんは10月22日、京都の任天堂本社で記者の取材に応じました。宮本さんは、この勲章は大勢の人といっしょに作ってきた結果だと話しました。そして、その人たちの代表として受けると述べました。また、中学生のころはマンガ家になりたかったとも話しました。
