Honeybees Are Winning the Fight for Flowers

1Honeybees regularly push wild pollinators off flowers, and the competition grows in warmer weather, researchers in England have found. The study, led by Anglia Ruskin University, was published in the journal Ecological Entomology.

2Over two years, the team spent 93 hours watching insects on bramble and ivy at five sites in and around Cambridge. Every site was less than 300 meters from honeybee colonies. The researchers recorded whether each meeting between insects ended with one insect winning or with both sharing the flower.

3Where honeybees were more common, other pollinators were harder to find. On bramble, doubling the number of honeybees was linked to 14 percent fewer bumblebees. Other insects avoided honeybees in 28 percent of meetings on bramble and 36 percent on ivy. In at least one in five of their wins, honeybees pushed or chased their rivals away.

4Only one species regularly fought back. It was the ivy bee, a solitary bee first seen in Britain in 2001. It was the only insect that often challenged honeybees, and it sometimes won.

5Competition rose as temperatures went up. Heat can reduce the nectar that flowers produce. Lead author Victoria Buckle said the study is not meant to discourage beekeeping. But she said warming in the UK is likely to make the competition worse. She said it is important for honeybees and wild pollinators to live together, especially in places with many hives, such as cities. Last year, 47,000 people were registered as beekeepers in the UK, up from 19,000 in 2010.

文法ポイント:接続詞 as(~するにつれて)

Competition rose as temperatures went up.
