Honeybees Push Other Insects Away

1Honeybees often push other insects away from flowers, a study in England has found. Honeybees make honey, and many people keep them.

2Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University watched insects on two kinds of plants near Cambridge. They watched for 93 hours over two years. Each place was close to honeybee hives.

3When there were more honeybees, there were fewer wild bees and other insects. Other insects often stayed away from honeybees. Sometimes the honeybees chased them off the flowers.

4There was more fighting on warmer days. Hot weather can make flowers give less nectar, so insects have less food.

5The lead researcher said the team does not want people to stop keeping bees. Last year, 47,000 people in the UK were registered beekeepers, up from 19,000 in 2010.

When there were more honeybees, there were fewer wild bees There was more fighting on warmer days.
