Exercise or a Nap? Both Protected Memory After 30 Hours Awake

1A 20-minute bike workout helped memory after a sleepless night nearly as much as a 90-minute nap did, researchers at McGill University in Canada have found. The study appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

2More than 50 healthy young adults stayed awake for 30 hours in a lab, where researchers kept watch over them. They were then randomly placed in one of three groups. One group pedaled a stationary bike for 20 minutes, and another took a 90-minute nap. The third group, used for comparison, did neither.

3Next, the participants looked at a series of images while wearing caps that recorded their brain waves. Three days later, they were shown those images mixed with new ones and asked which they had seen before. Both the exercise group and the nap group remembered more than the comparison group, with an average improvement of about 22 percent. The scores of the exercise and nap groups were similar.

4The brain recordings suggested the two groups got there in different ways. The nap seemed to refresh the brain so it could learn new things more easily. Exercise seemed to help the brain use the resources it had left more efficiently.

5The researchers said exercise cannot replace sleep. The study tested only one night without sleep in a lab, so the results may not apply to people who lose sleep night after night. The study's first author, Madhura Lotlikar, said exercise is cheap and easy, and that a nap is not always possible during a work shift.

本文の looked at a series of images while wearing caps(帽子をかぶりながら何枚もの画像を見た)がその例。
