How Late-Night Scrolling Cuts Into Teen Sleep
1Teenagers fell asleep later and slept less on nights when they used their phones after 10 p.m. more than usual, according to a study published on Oct. 19 in JAMA Pediatrics. The researchers are from Columbia University, Stony Brook University and Seattle Children's Research Institute.
2Most earlier studies relied on teens reporting their own phone use and sleep. This time, an app on the teens' Android phones recorded how they used their phones, while Fitbit devices measured their sleep. The 425 participants, whose average age was 14.8, were part of the ABCD Study, the biggest US study to follow young people's brains and health over many years. Together, they provided data for 7,591 nights between 2020 and 2024.
3On nights when a teen's phone use after 10 p.m. was higher than that teen's own average, sleep began about 65 minutes later. Total sleep time was about 20 minutes shorter. The researchers also looked at cutoffs from 8 p.m. to midnight and found that the links grew stronger the later the phone use was.
4Phone use in the final minutes before falling asleep was tied to more time spent awake after sleep began. The link was strongest for use in the last five minutes. Most of the extra waking happened in the first 30 minutes of sleep.
5Because this was an observational study, it shows links rather than cause and effect. Even so, the authors said that cutting back on evening phone use, especially after 10 p.m. and just before bed, may improve sleep for teenagers.

本文の the links grew stronger the later the phone use was は「スマホの使用がおそいほど、関係は強くなった」という意味で、the later the phone use was(使用がおそければおそいほど)が後ろについた形。 The later you stay up, the more tired you feel.
