Valles Marineris Is Still on the Move

1The solar system's biggest canyon system is still active today, according to a new study of a marsquake recorded more than five years ago. Researchers at Imperial College London and Columbia University published the findings in the journal Nature Communications.

2Valles Marineris runs for about 3,900 kilometers on Mars. It is up to 600 kilometers wide and more than 9 kilometers deep. Compared with the Grand Canyon, it is about nine times longer, more than 20 times wider and about five times deeper.

3NASA's InSight lander recorded the quake, known as S0976a, on Aug. 25, 2021. It was a magnitude 4.2 event that came from the far side of Mars. By studying how different seismic waves reached the lander, the team worked out the type of motion at the source. The best match was rock sliding sideways along a steep fault about 20 to 40 kilometers below the western part of the canyon.

4The researchers also tested other possible causes, such as a meteorite hitting the ground or a large landslide. Neither could explain the waves, and satellite images taken after the quake showed no new crater and no big new landslide.

5The faults formed billions of years ago, when the canyon was taking shape. The team suggested that the faults are still weak enough to break under the stresses on Mars today. Those stresses may come from the planet slowly cooling, a nearby volcanic region called Tharsis and the canyon itself. Mars does not have moving plates like Earth. Its outer layer is one solid piece that is slowly cooling, like a lid. InSight ended its mission in 2022. Even so, researchers are still finding new results in its data.

文法ポイント:neither(どちらも~ない)

Neither could explain the waves neither A nor B(A も B も~ない)の形もよく出る。
