A Giant Canyon on Mars Still Shakes

1Scientists have found that a giant canyon on Mars can still have quakes today. The canyon is called Valles Marineris.

2It is about 3,900 kilometers long and more than 9 kilometers deep. It is about nine times longer than the Grand Canyon in the United States.

3In 2021, NASA's InSight lander recorded a quake on Mars. The quake came from the other side of the planet. Researchers studied its waves again and found that it started deep under the canyon. Two blocks of rock slid past each other there.

4The cracks in the rock formed billions of years ago. But they can still move today, the team said. InSight stopped its work in 2022, but its data is still giving scientists new answers.

全文訳

1火星の巨大な谷では、今でも地震が起きることがあると、科学者たちが発見しました。その谷は、マリネリス峡谷と呼ばれています。

2長さは約3,900キロ、深さは9キロ以上あります。長さは、アメリカのグランドキャニオンの約9倍です。

32021年、NASA（アメリカ航空宇宙局）の探査機インサイトが、火星で地震を記録しました。その地震は、惑星の反対側から来ていました。研究者たちがその波を調べ直すと、地震は谷の地下深くで始まっていたことがわかりました。そこで、2つの岩のかたまりが、すれちがうようにずれたのです。

4その岩のさけ目は、何十億年も前にできたものです。でも今でも動くことがある、と研究チームは話しています。インサイトは2022年に仕事を終えましたが、そのデータは今も科学者に新しい答えをくれています。

文法ポイント：比較級 + than（～より…）・倍数の言い方

「A は B の～倍…だ」は〈～ times + 比較級 + than B〉で言える。本文の about nine times longer than the Grand Canyon は「グランドキャニオンの約9倍の長さ」という意味。nine times as long as ～ と言うこともできる。
