From Streaming to the Big Screen

1Cho Kaguya-hime, an anime film that has been streaming on Netflix since January, has earned more than 3.4 billion yen at Japanese theaters. Its distributor, Twin Engine, gave the update on October 20, when it also announced new screening plans.

2The film, known in English as Cosmic Princess Kaguya, began streaming worldwide on Netflix on January 22. It opened in theaters on February 20 for what was planned as a one-week run. Because demand stayed high, the run was extended. It finally ended on June 18. By then, about 1.34 million people had seen it in theaters, bringing in about 2.7 billion yen.

3The story draws on The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a classic Japanese story, but sets it in a near-future Japan. Iroha, a 17-year-old high school student, finds a baby that comes out of a glowing electric pole instead of bamboo. The baby quickly grows into a girl named Kaguya, who wants to become a top streamer in a virtual world called Tsukuyomi. Songs in the film come from popular Vocaloid producers, including ryo of supercell and kz of livetune.

4The film returned to theaters on September 18. This time, it was also shown in special formats such as 4DX, which adds motion and other effects. That return will end on November 5. From November 6, a second run in the regular format will begin at new theaters.

5Twin Engine also said 4DX screenings will continue for one more week, from November 6 to 12, because many shows were still nearly full. Some theaters will show a gentler 4DX version with weaker motion for viewers who are sensitive to strong movement.

By then, about 1.34 million people had seen it in theaters
