More Sleep, Better Grades

1College students in the United States got better grades after they were paid to sleep a little more. The extra sleep was only about 19 minutes on school nights.

2More than 1,100 students at the University of Pittsburgh joined the study. Before the study, they slept about 6.6 hours a night on average. For about half of them, bedtime was after 1 a.m. on average.

3Everyone wore a small device that measured sleep. Some students were chosen at random. They got about 5 dollars for each school night when they slept seven hours or more.

4Other students got no bedtime reminders or nightly money. Compared with them, the paid students had 26 percent more nights with seven hours of sleep or more. Their grades also went up a little that term. Bedtime reminders without money did not help much. The effect was biggest for students in their first term of college.

Some students were chosen at random.
