Bits of Rock Turn a Dead Star Green

1Astronomers have identified the first known star that human eyes would see as green. The star, called WD J1330+6435, is a white dwarf. A team from the University of Warwick in England, including astrophysicist Mark Hollands, described it in the journal RAS Techniques and Instruments.

2Ordinary stars are almost always orange, white or blue, because their color is set mainly by temperature. According to Popular Science, the researchers know of no earlier reliable report of a green star.

3White dwarfs are the dense remains that stars like the sun leave behind when they die. According to Popular Science, the atmosphere of the coldest white dwarfs can be about as dense as water. Because of this, small amounts of other elements can change their color. According to Popular Science, WD J1330+6435 has pulled in bits of rock from its own planetary system over time. These bits added calcium, lithium and sodium to its atmosphere. Hollands said the sodium absorbs the star's orange light. The team's computer models show that this makes the star look green.

4The team did not judge the colors by eye. They took existing measurements of each star's light and used a computer program that copies the way human eyes see color. They studied 151 white dwarfs. All of them are no more than about 65 light-years from Earth.

5Popular Science reported that only five of them showed unusual colors: two looked yellow and three looked pink. A typical white dwarf in the group looked white. The green star, about 284 light-years away according to Popular Science, is too far to be in this group. Popular Science also reported that another white dwarf, about 48 light-years away, has a deep salmon-pink color because of carbon. Hollands said that, with some luck, the number of known green white dwarfs could grow to 10 or 20 once new surveys start sending data.

The star, called WD J1330+6435, is a white dwarf.
