An Earthquake Warning Is Canceled

1Japan's weather agency sent out an earthquake warning on Friday afternoon. Less than 10 minutes later, it canceled the warning.

2The warning came at around 12:40 p.m. on October 16. It said strong shaking could hit a wide area from Hokkaido to the Tokai region. It also showed an earthquake of magnitude 9.9 near the Kuril Islands. No earthquake that big has ever been recorded.

3There was a real earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. But it was magnitude 6.9 and more than 100 kilometers deep. Japan had only weak shaking. A weather company said there was no tsunami danger.

4The Japan Meteorological Agency is checking why the warning was wrong. Later, it said a function to stop wrong warnings did not work. It said the mistake was not caused by a cyberattack. A similar mistake happened in 2018.

5These warnings are sent to TVs and phones when strong shaking is expected. When you hear one, the agency says to protect your head and get under a sturdy desk.

These warnings are sent to TVs and phones ...
