A Pokémon Board Game Built Around Lies and Guesswork

1The Pokémon Company will release a board game on November 12 in which players battle with Pokémon while trying to work out who secretly belongs to Team Rocket. The Japanese title of the game asks a fellow player whether they might be a member of the gang. On October 15, the company released a video featuring Megumi Hayashibara, Shinichiro Miki and Inuko Inuyama, the voice actors behind Team Rocket in the Pokémon anime.

2The game is designed for four to six players aged 10 and over, and a round takes 30 minutes or more. Each player is randomly given one of four roles, which are Gym Leader, Gym Trainer, Challenger and Team Rocket member. Only the Gym Leader's role is shown to everyone. Each role has its own way of winning.

3Players pick a partner Pokémon from a deck of cards, and each Pokémon has a different fighting style. Charizard, for example, is built for attacking, while Venusaur is better at defending. Players use cards to launch moves or to dodge them, and anyone who is knocked out has to reveal their role. Reviewers who tried the game early said the fun comes from reading other players through their words and choices in battle.

4Games like this, where some players hide who they are, are often called social deduction games. Players have to make guesses from small clues. A nervous answer or an odd move can give a player away. The game was developed with YOKA Games, a board game maker.

5The box contains 60 Pokémon cards, 108 play cards and six role cards, and it will cost 2,200 yen. It will also be sold early at Game Market 2026 Autumn, a board game event held in Chiba on October 17 and 18.

1株式会社ポケモンは11月12日に、ポケモンでバトルしながら、ひそかにロケット団に入っているのがだれかを見抜くボードゲームを発売します。ゲームの日本語のタイトルは、ほかのプレイヤーに「もしかして、ロケット団の一員なのか」とたずねる言葉になっています。10月15日には、ポケモンのアニメでロケット団の声を担当している林原めぐみさん、三木眞一郎さん、犬山イヌコさんが出演する映像を公開しました。

2ゲームは10歳以上の4〜6人向けで、1回は30分ほどかかります。プレイヤーはそれぞれ、ジムリーダー・ジムトレーナー・挑戦者・ロケット団員の4つのうち1つの役を、くじのように決められます。役を全員に見せるのは、ジムリーダーだけです。役によって、勝つための条件がちがいます。

3プレイヤーは山札から相棒のポケモンを選びます。ポケモンによって戦い方がちがいます。たとえばリザードンは攻撃が得意で、フシギバナは守りが得意です。カードを使ってわざを出したり、よけたりします。そして、たおされたプレイヤーは自分の役を明かさなければなりません。ひと足先に遊んだ記者たちは、相手の言葉やバトルでの選び方から正体を読み取るところがおもしろいと伝えています。

4このように、正体をかくすプレイヤーがいるゲームは、よく「ソーシャル・ディダクション・ゲーム（正体隠匿ゲーム）」と呼ばれます。プレイヤーは、小さな手がかりから推理しなければなりません。あわてた答え方や不自然な動きで、正体がばれてしまうこともあります。このゲームは、ボードゲームの会社 YOKA Games と一緒に作られました。

文法ポイント：前置詞 + 関係代名詞（in which：その中で～する）
