A 2006 Music Video Becomes a Fried Rice Meme Among Japan's Idols

1A scene from a music video released about 20 years ago has become a popular meme among Japanese idol groups this month. The video belongs to "SEXY BOY: Soyokaze ni Yorisotte," a 2006 single by Morning Musume, which fans shorten to "Sekubo."

2In the opening seconds, the members pass in front of the camera one after another, each leaning in to peer into the lens. On October 1, a user on X compared the scene to someone standing outside a microwave and watching frozen fried rice heat up. The post was widely shared, and many people went back to the original video to see the scene for themselves.

3The idols noticed quickly. On October 3, the current members, now known as Morning Musume '26, recreated the moves on the group's official TikTok account. AKB48 followed on October 6 with its own version on X and TikTok. By October 12, the boy band INI and the groups CUTIE STREET and OCHA NORMA had also posted their takes, the music news site THE FIRST TIMES reported.

4Each group added its own twist. INI filmed its clip from the point of view of the fried rice. OCHA NORMA's video begins with a microwave door opening, after which the members stare inside as they walk by. In AKB48's version, the members focus on the camera so hard that some of them bump into each other at the end.

5The meme has also brought new attention to the original song. Under the music video on YouTube, many viewers have left comments saying they found it because of the fried rice joke. Last year, Juice=Juice, a group from the same idol family as Morning Musume, also broke through after one of its songs spread on social media.

120年ほど前に公開されたミュージックビデオの1場面が、今月、日本のアイドルグループのあいだで人気のミームになっています。それはモーニング娘。の2006年のシングル「SEXY BOY～そよ風に寄り添って～」のビデオで、ファンはこの曲を略して「セクボ」とよんでいます。

2ビデオの最初の数秒で、メンバーが次々にカメラの前を通り、1人ずつ身を乗り出してレンズをのぞきこみます。10月1日、Xのあるユーザーが、この場面を「電子レンジの外に立って、冷凍チャーハンが温まるのを見ている人」にたとえました。その投稿は大きく広まり、多くの人がその場面を自分の目で確かめようと、元のビデオを見に行きました。
