Rhode Island Pumpkin Becomes the First to Top 3,000 Pounds

1A grower in Rhode Island has produced the first pumpkin known to weigh more than 3,000 pounds. The giant fruit weighed 3,156 pounds, or about 1,430 kilograms, at the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-Off in the town of Warren on October 10.

2If Guinness World Records approves the result, the pumpkin will replace a record that is barely a week old. On October 3, a British gardener set the current record with a pumpkin weighing 2,856.8 pounds at a contest in Wargrave, England. The new pumpkin is nearly 300 pounds, or about 136 kilograms, heavier. The Rhode Island grower is no stranger to records, since in 2012 he became the first person to grow a pumpkin weighing over 2,000 pounds.

3Record pumpkins come from a variety called Atlantic Giant, which is a different species from the pumpkins people usually carve for Halloween. The plants need 120 to 160 days to mature. Growers usually pollinate the flowers by hand. They also remove all but one pumpkin from each plant so that the plant's energy goes into a single fruit. At their peak, Atlantic Giants can gain 30 to 50 pounds, or roughly 14 to 23 kilograms, in a single day.

4A giant pumpkin is about 90 percent water. During the busiest part of the season, growers commonly give each plant more than 300 liters of water a day, The Weather Channel reported. Weather can also ruin a season, since temperatures above about 30 degrees Celsius can damage pollen and an early frost can stop growth. This year, the Rhode Island grower raised his pumpkin in a greenhouse for the first time, and he said it made a big difference.

If Guinness World Records approves the result, the pumpkin will replace ...
