Wahoo Tops Teen Girls' Word Ranking, With Frenemy Second
1Wahoo, a playful shout from an old YouTube video, has topped a ranking of popular words among junior high and high school girls in Japan. Frenemy, an English blend of friend and enemy, came in second. The company AMF released the list on June 29 as part of its trend awards for the first half of 2026. The results were based on a survey of 1,000 girls across Japan, along with picks by a group of trend researchers.
2Wahoo also showed up in a separate survey. In early June, Wakamono Research asked 377 high school students across Japan, both boys and girls, about things that had gone viral for them in the first half of the year. Wahoo ranked third with 4.0 percent of responses.
3According to AMF, wahoo began as an ad-lib by SEIKIN, a popular Japanese YouTuber, in a video posted in 2014. More than a decade later, the clip was rediscovered on TikTok, and the shout spread again. AMF said the word has no particular meaning, and that girls enjoy it for exactly that reason.
4Frenemy is a blend, a word formed by joining parts of two other words. Brunch, formed from breakfast and lunch, is another example. Dictionaries define a frenemy as a person who is friendly with you but is also a rival. Dictionary.com says the word was first recorded in the early 1950s. AMF said the term is not new but became popular again among Japanese girls this year.
5In English, frenemy is an informal noun, and its plural form is frenemies. It is pronounced FREN-uh-mee, with the stress on the first syllable. The word can describe groups as well as people. For example, two rival companies that work together on a project can be called frenemies.

本文の a video posted in 2014 は「2014年に投稿された動画」、a word formed by joining parts of two other words は「2つの単語の一部をつなげて作られた語」という意味。
