1Wahoo has been chosen as the top word among junior high and high school girls in Japan. Frenemy, an English word, came second. The company AMF made the ranking with a survey of 1,000 girls. It shared the results in June.

2Wahoo comes from a YouTube video. A popular YouTuber said it in a video more than 10 years ago. Then the word became popular again on TikTok. AMF said students enjoy wahoo because it has no special meaning.

3Frenemy is made by joining two English words, friend and enemy. A frenemy acts like a friend but is also your rival. The word brunch is made in the same way, from breakfast and lunch. People have used frenemy in English since at least the 1950s.

4In English, frenemy is a noun. When there are two or more, we say frenemies. Here is an example: My brother and I are frenemies.

全文訳

1日本の女子中高生のあいだで、「ワホー」がいちばんの流行語に選ばれました。2位は、英語の「フレネミー」でした。AMF という会社が、女子中学生と女子高校生1,000人へのアンケートをもとにランキングを作りました。結果は6月に発表されました。

2「ワホー」は、YouTube の動画から生まれた言葉です。人気のユーチューバーが、10年以上前の動画の中で言ったのが始まりです。その後、TikTok でまた人気になりました。AMF によると、生徒たちは「ワホー」に特別な意味がないところを楽しんでいます。

3frenemy は、friend（友だち）と enemy（敵）という2つの英単語をくっつけて作られています。フレネミーとは、友だちのようにふるまうけれど、ライバルでもある人のことです。brunch（ブランチ）という単語も、breakfast（朝ごはん）と lunch（昼ごはん）から同じように作られています。frenemy は、少なくとも1950年代から英語で使われています。

4英語では、frenemy は名詞です。2人以上のときは frenemies と言います。たとえば「ぼくと兄は、仲がいいけどライバルでもある」という意味で My brother and I are frenemies. と言えます。

文法ポイント：受け身（be動詞 + 過去分詞）

「～される」を表す形。本文の Frenemy is made by joining two English words. は「frenemy は2つの英単語をくっつけて作られている」という意味。has been chosen（選ばれた）も受け身の仲間（現在完了の受け身）。
