Sleep Linked to Grades More Than Screen Time or Diet

1Among young adolescents, sleep is more closely linked to grades and social life than diet, exercise or screen time, researchers at the University of California, Davis have found. UC Davis Health announced the results on August 4, and the study appeared in the journal Psychological Medicine.

2The team analyzed data on children aged 10 to 13 from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a large U.S. research project. More than 6,000 were included in the analysis of grades, and more than 7,000 in the analysis of social problems. The researchers compared four lifestyle factors: sleep quality, screen time, physical activity and diet.

3Children with symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health problems tended to have lower grades and more social difficulties. Lifestyle habits accounted for a large share of this connection, and sleep quality played the biggest role. For anxiety, sleep accounted for 36.3 percent of the link with lower grades, and for depression, 18.5 percent. Screen time ranked second at around 5 to 6 percent, while exercise and diet had smaller effects.

4Jason Smucny, the study's first author, said the team had predicted that sleep would matter. But sleep's large lead over screen time surprised them, he said. Tara Niendam, the senior author, said sleep routines are something families can work on. She added that better sleep is not the answer to all mental health problems.

5The study does not prove that poor sleep causes lower grades. It shows a link, not cause and effect. The researchers also said healthy habits do not replace care from mental health professionals.

6A separate Swiss study looked at later school start times. A secondary school in Gossau made early lessons optional, so regular classes now begin at 8:30 a.m. instead of 7:20 a.m. About 95 percent of the students chose to start later, and they slept about 45 minutes longer on school nights. Their scores in English and math also improved.

本文の said the team had predicted that sleep would matter は「(研究の前から)睡眠が関係すると予想していた、と話した」。
