Sleep and School Grades

1Sleep is more closely linked to grades than diet, exercise, or screen time, a study says. Researchers at the University of California, Davis studied children aged 10 to 13.

2The data came from a large research project in the United States. More than 6,000 children were part of the study on grades. The team looked at four habits: sleep, screen time, exercise, and diet.

3Children with signs of depression or anxiety often had lower grades. Sleep explained part of this link. For anxiety, it explained more than a third. Screen time came second, and exercise and diet mattered less.

4The study shows a link, but it does not prove that sleep causes better grades. In a separate study in Switzerland, one school let students start classes later. They slept about 45 minutes longer on school nights.
