Setlog, the Hourly Video App, Spreads Among Japanese Teens
1Setlog, a video app from South Korea, has spread quickly among Japanese teenagers this year. The technology news site ITmedia reported in July that it had held first place in the App Store's free app ranking in Japan since around May. Business Insider reported in June that the app first took off in South Korea after K-pop stars posted vlogs made with it.
2Users form closed groups of up to 12 people, although ITmedia said a later update raised the limit to 20. Once an hour, each member films a clip of about two seconds. At the end of the day, the app combines everyone's clips into a single vlog, so friends can see what the others were doing at the same hour.
3In July, Parente, a company that runs a discount app for students, surveyed 479 students, most of them in high school or university. Of those, 91.4 percent knew Setlog, and 73.7 percent were using it. About 70 percent of users had started because a friend invited them. The most common reason for liking the app was that users could record at their own pace, without the pressure of alerts that apps such as BeReal send.
4Data from the research firm Sensor Tower, reported in October, showed that Japan had overtaken South Korea as the app's biggest market in mid-July. Japanese users spent only about nine minutes a day on Setlog, far less than on TikTok, but they opened it around 15 times a day.
5Still, 51.0 percent of the students in Parente's survey said they expect Setlog to be a passing trend, while 33.7 percent said it could become a standard social media app.

文法ポイント:接続詞 while(対比「〜なのに対して」)
51.0 percent ... said they expect Setlog to be a passing trend, while 33.7 percent said it could become a standard social media app
