Quizzing Raises Achievement in Real Classrooms, Review of 222 Studies Finds

1Short quizzes raise students' achievement in real classrooms, a large review of research has found. Researchers from Beijing Normal University, University College London and universities in Spain and Singapore published the review in the journal Psychological Bulletin in March 2021.

2Psychologists call this the testing effect. Research going back about 100 years shows that trying to recall information helps people remember it longer than simply studying it again. Much of that research took place in laboratories, so the team checked whether the effect holds up in schools.

3The researchers combined data on 48,478 students from 222 separate classroom studies. Overall, quizzing raised achievement by a medium amount compared with other ways of learning, including rereading. The benefit appeared at every level from elementary school to university and across 18 subject areas. Quizzes helped students remember facts, and they also improved understanding of ideas and the use of knowledge to solve problems.

4Many teachers worry that frequent tests make students anxious. In a 2023 review in the journal Educational Psychology Review, some of the same researchers combined 24 studies with 3,374 participants. On average, practice tests lowered test anxiety by a medium amount. Easy quizzes seemed to reduce anxiety more than difficult ones, though the authors said this result should be read with caution.

5The authors said research on quizzes and anxiety is still at an early stage. David Shanks of University College London told The Hechinger Report that the findings are not the final word. The authors suggested ungraded quizzes and quizzes that feel like games as ways to make them less stressful.

6In the 2021 review, quizzes helped more when students were given the correct answers afterward than when they were not.

本文の quizzes helped more when students were given the correct answers afterward than when they were not は「答えを教えてもらったときのほうが、教えてもらわなかったときより、小テストの効果が大きかった」。 最後の were not のあとには given the correct answers が省略されている。
