Quizzes Help Students Learn

1Short quizzes in class help students learn, a large review of studies has found. Researchers in China, Britain, Spain, and Singapore did the review.

2They looked at 222 studies from real classrooms. Together, the studies included more than 48,000 students. The students were in elementary school, junior high, high school, and university.

3The studies compared students who took quizzes with students who did not. On average, the quizzes raised students' test scores. Quizzes also worked better than just reading the material again.

4Some people worry that quizzes make students nervous. In 2023, some of the same researchers looked at 24 studies about this. On average, practice tests made students less worried about tests. But the researchers said more studies are needed.

5In the first review, quizzes helped more when students learned the right answers afterward.

practice tests made students less worried
