Malatang Shops Are Opening Fast
1Many new malatang shops are opening in Japan. Malatang is a hot and spicy soup from China.
2At these shops, customers choose noodles, vegetables and other foods themselves. Then the staff cook them in the soup.
3The data company Review studied public records about new restaurants. It said 273 malatang shops opened from January to June this year. That is more than the 225 shops that opened in all of last year. In 2022, only 21 shops opened.
4About 60 percent of this year's new shops are outside the Tokyo area. Malatang is also popular with teenagers. It was on a list of 50 trend words for junior high and high school girls. A cooking website also named it the top food word of the first half of 2026.
