Greener Schools Linked to Small Gains in Memory and Attention
1Children whose schools were surrounded by more greenery made slightly bigger gains in memory and attention over a year, a study in Barcelona, Spain, has found. A team led by Payam Dadvand at CREAL, a Barcelona research center, published the study in the journal PNAS in June 2015.
2The researchers followed nearly 2,600 children aged 7 to 10 from January 2012 to March 2013. Every three months, the children took computer tests of working memory and inattentiveness. Working memory is the brain's ability to hold and update information for a short time. The team measured greenness around each child's home, school and route to school with detailed satellite images.
3Greenness in and around schools was linked to more progress in working memory and a larger drop in inattentiveness. Total greenness around home, school and the route between them showed a similar link. The differences were small.
4Because the team observed children rather than changing their schools, the study shows an association, not proof that greenery caused the gains. The researchers said green spaces may help partly by cutting children's exposure to air pollution. When they added a traffic-related pollutant to their analysis, it explained 20 to 65 percent of the links between school greenness and the test gains.
5A 2008 experiment in the United States tested attention restoration theory. The theory says busy streets demand constant focus, while nature holds attention gently and lets that focus recover. At the University of Michigan, a small group of students walked 2.8 miles, or about 4.5 kilometers, through a tree-lined arboretum or through downtown Ann Arbor. A week later, each student took the other route.
6On a test of repeating numbers backward, scores improved after the arboretum walk, but there was no clear change after the downtown walk. The study was small, and the walkers were university students, not children. In a second test, looking at photos of nature also raised scores, but city photos did not.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 whose(所有格)
Children whose schools were surrounded by more greenery his / her / their などの代わりに whose を使って2つの文を1つにする。Children made bigger gains. + Their schools were surrounded by greenery. → Children whose schools were surrounded by greenery made bigger gains.
