Green Schools and Your Brain

1Children at greener schools made slightly bigger gains in memory and attention, a study in Spain found. Researchers in Barcelona studied nearly 2,600 children aged 7 to 10.

2For one year, the children took memory and attention tests on computers every three months. The team used satellite pictures to see how green the area around each school was.

3Children with more plants around their schools improved more on the tests. But the differences were small. The researchers said cleaner air near green schools may explain part of the link. The study shows a link, but it does not prove that plants caused the change.

4In a small 2008 study in the United States, university students walked about 4.5 kilometers. One day they walked through a quiet park with many trees. On another day, they walked along busy streets in town. After the park walk, they did better on a test of repeating numbers backward. After the city walk, there was no clear change.
