Chappy Kobun: Teens Turn ChatGPT's Style Into Slang

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1Young people in Japan have started borrowing the way ChatGPT writes its answers, and the habit now has a name of its own. It is called Chappy kobun. Chappy is a nickname for the chatbot, and kobun means a sentence pattern.

2The youth research group Wakamono Real Lab surveyed 600 people aged 15 to 29 across Japan from June 11 to 15. In its buzzword ranking, released on July 24, Chappy kobun came third. First place went to a phrase from an idol group's song, which was chosen by 27.0 percent of respondents. The word meroi, used for someone so attractive that you melt, came second.

3Chappy kobun imitates the way ChatGPT usually organizes its replies. The chatbot tends to state its conclusion first, break the topic into points and finish with a judgment. Young people copy this pattern in everyday conversation and in social media posts. A typical opener is Ketsuron kara iu ne, which roughly means let me give you the bottom line first.

4Other surveys have picked up the same trend. Another research group published a ranking of youth trends in June. It listed a ChatGPT-style phrase meaning that is totally correct among the expressions popular in the first half of 2026.

5The nickname itself has been around for some time. In November 2025, Chappy was one of 30 words nominated for Japan's buzzword of the year award.

6Some respondents in the Wakamono Real Lab survey said they use ChatGPT often. The group said AI is becoming a close partner in daily life, not just a tool for searching or working faster. It added that young people now turn to AI to put their worries and thoughts into words.

The nickname itself has been around for some time. は「そのあだ名はしばらく前から(今まで)ずっとある」という意味。be around は「存在する、出回っている」。for some time(しばらくの間)や since 〜 といっしょによく使う。
