One Minute of Slow Breathing Linked to Lower Anxiety in Students

1One minute of slow breathing was linked to lower anxiety among university students in stressful everyday moments, a study in Germany has found. Researchers at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt led the study, which appeared online in April in the journal Anxiety, Stress, & Coping.

2The team followed 47 students aged 18 to 30 between April and July 2024. Whenever they felt tense, nervous or worried, the students opened a smartphone app and rated their anxiety. The app then told them to do box breathing, cyclic sighing or nothing, with the order chosen at random. Five minutes later, they rated their anxiety again and took a 90-second attention test.

3Box breathing has four equal steps of four seconds each: breathing in, holding, breathing out and holding again. In cyclic sighing, people take a deep breath in through the nose, followed by a second, shorter one. They then breathe out slowly through the mouth for about twice as long.

4After both exercises, anxiety fell more than when the students did nothing. The researchers called the effects very strong, but measured them only five minutes later. There was no clear difference between the two techniques. On the attention test, students made fewer mistakes after box breathing, especially those who tend to feel anxious. However, both exercises were followed by slower reaction times.

5The study was a small pilot, and 43 of the 47 students were women. The team could not confirm that the students did the exercises, and said expectations may have affected the results. The researchers said it is still unclear how long the effect lasts. The study involved healthy young people and did not test breathing as a treatment for anxiety disorders.

6In a 2023 Stanford University study, 111 healthy volunteers practiced breathing or meditation for five minutes a day for a month. In that study, cyclic sighing produced the biggest daily rise in positive feelings. The German students rated box breathing as easier and less annoying than cyclic sighing.

文法ポイント:付帯状況の with(with + 名詞 + 過去分詞)

本文の with the order chosen at random は「順番がランダムに選ばれた状態で」。
