One Minute of Breathing

1Students felt less nervous after one minute of slow breathing, a study in Germany found. The study looked at two kinds of breathing.

2Researchers at a university in Germany worked with 47 university students. When the students felt nervous, they opened an app on their phones. The app told them to do one of two exercises or nothing at all. Five minutes later, they checked their feelings again.

3After both exercises, the students felt less nervous than after doing nothing. In box breathing, people breathe in for four seconds and hold their breath for four. Then they breathe out for four seconds and hold again for four. In cyclic sighing, people breathe in twice through their nose. Then they breathe out slowly through their mouth.

4The study was small, and most of the students were women. It did not test breathing as a treatment for illness. The students said box breathing was easier than cyclic sighing.

after do nothing とは言わない。
