One in 100 Resumes Hides Text Meant Only for AI

1About 1 percent of job applications in a large study contained hidden text aimed at the AI systems that screen them. Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, the University of California, Berkeley and other institutions examined 196,682 real resumes. The resumes were provided by hireEZ, a company that makes hiring software.

2Many employers now use large language models, the technology behind chatbots, to sort through applications. Because the AI reads every word in a file, applicants can slip in text that a human reviewer would never notice. Security experts call this kind of trick a prompt injection attack.

3The study found that applicants usually hid the text by making it white or printing it in an extremely small font. In some cases, the letters were only one point in size. More than 90 percent of the hidden messages did not give the AI direct orders. Most simply stuffed in lists of skill keywords, while others added false work experience or copied the job requirements word for word. A small number told the AI to ignore its earlier instructions and rate the applicant as highly qualified.

4In total, the team found 2,030 resumes with hidden text. The researchers said resumes with hidden text have become noticeably more common over the past one to two years. They presented the findings at the USENIX Security Symposium, a major computer security conference held in Baltimore in August.

文法ポイント:第5文型 call A B(AをBとよぶ)

Security experts call this kind of trick a prompt injection attack. make A B(AをBにする)も同じ形。
