Hairy-Footed Sea Spider Among Two New Species from the Salish Sea

1Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have described two new species of sea spider from the Salish Sea, off Canada's west coast. They are the first new sea spiders described from the area in almost a century. The study appeared in the journal Organisms Diversity and Evolution.

2Sea spiders are arthropods that never left the ocean, and they first appeared around 500 million years ago. They are related to land spiders, scorpions and horseshoe crabs. Some species have up to 12 legs, and they breathe through their skin. Their size ranges from less than a centimeter to more than 70 centimeters in Antarctica.

3The first new species, Callipallene pilosuspedes, has red eyes and long, curved spines on its lower legs. Its name is a play on the Latin for hairy feet. It grooms itself with flexible egg-carrying limbs that have comb-like spines. Only one specimen was found.

4The second species, Tanystylum kiixin, was named after an ancient Indigenous village site near where it was first collected. Its egg-carrying limbs are smaller and stiffer, so it cannot groom itself well. As a result, it is often covered in dirt and tiny parasites.

5Lead author Cormac Toler-Scott collected the animals for his master's degree, diving as deep as 18 meters between September 2023 and August 2024. He said he wanted to study how climate change affects sea spiders but found that little was known about them. Because his study covered only one field season, he expects more undescribed species in the area.

文法ポイント:結果を表す so と as a result

so(だから)や as a result(その結果)は、原因と結果をつなぐ。 Its egg-carrying limbs are smaller and stiffer, so it cannot groom itself well. As a result, it is often covered in dirt ...
