Japan Leads OECD in PISA 2025 as Global Scores Slide

1The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development released the results of its 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, on September 8. Japanese 15-year-olds ranked first among the OECD's 38 member countries in reading, mathematics and science. It is the first time Japan has topped the OECD in all three subjects since the test began in 2000.

2PISA is run by the OECD every three years. The test does not focus on memorized facts. Instead, it checks whether students can put their knowledge to work on real-world problems. More than 760,000 teenagers took the latest test in 2025. In Japan, the participants were first-year high school students. Along with the test, students answer a questionnaire about their learning and daily lives.

3When all participating countries and regions are included, Japan placed fourth in reading and fifth in both math and science. The OECD is made up mainly of wealthy countries, but many other countries and regions also take part in PISA. Some education systems outside the OECD, mainly in Asia, scored higher.

4Japan's top OECD position came as average scores across developed countries continued to fall. In those countries, average results in all three subjects dropped to their lowest level in the history of the test.

5The assessment also asked students about their use of technology. Japanese students reported using generative AI for their studies less often than students in most other OECD countries.

本文の it checks whether students can put their knowledge to work on real-world problems は「生徒が知識を実際の問題に生かせるかどうかを調べる」という意味。
