A Very Hot Summer With Many 40-Degree Days

1Japan had its fifth-hottest summer on record this year, the weather agency said on September 1. From June to August, the average temperature was 1.02 degrees Celsius higher than normal.

2Japan's records began in 1898. The hottest summer was in 2025. The summers of 2023, 2024, and 2010 were also hotter than this one.

3Weather stations recorded temperatures of 40 degrees or higher 36 times this summer. That is the largest number since 2010. The weather agency calls a day of 40 degrees or more a kokushobi.

4Western Japan was very hot and dry. The agency said global warming was one of the reasons for the heat. Summers in Japan are getting hotter over the long term.

The hottest summer was in 2025.
