A Late Goal Ends Japan's World Cup Run
1Japan was knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 29 after losing 2-1 to Brazil in the round of 32 at Houston Stadium. Brazil scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
2The tournament, held in Canada, Mexico and the United States, was the first World Cup with 48 teams. The larger format added a new knockout round, the round of 32. Japan came from behind twice to draw with the Netherlands, then beat Tunisia 4-0. Four goals was Japan's highest total in a single World Cup match. A 1-1 draw with Sweden in Dallas secured second place in Group F.
3Against Brazil, Kaishu Sano gave Japan the lead in the 29th minute with a low shot from outside the penalty area. Casemiro leveled the score with a header in the 56th minute. Gabriel Martinelli then scored the winner for Brazil deep into stoppage time.
4Coach Hajime Moriyasu said Japan had moved closer to the world's leading teams, but he added that there was still a gap to close. Sano said both of Brazil's goals came from small details that he could have handled better.
5Brazil moved on to the round of 16. For Japan, the result matched its finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The team has now reached the knockout stage five times, but it has never won a knockout match. It has advanced from its group in five of the last seven World Cups.
