Japan's Births Hit a Record Low for the 10th Year

1The number of babies born to Japanese citizens in Japan fell to 671,236 in 2025, the health ministry said on June 3, 2026. It was the lowest figure since statistics began in 1899 and the 10th record low in a row.

2Births dropped by 14,937 from the previous year. The pace of decline slowed to 2.2 percent, after falling by more than 5 percent a year from 2022. Births rose in Tokyo, Toyama, Ishikawa, and Kagawa.

3The total fertility rate, the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime, fell to a record 1.14. Tokyo had the lowest rate at 0.96, staying below one for the third straight year. Okinawa had the highest at 1.52, followed by Miyazaki and Fukui. Births are falling about 15 years faster than a national research institute had forecast.

4A ministry official said the main causes are a shrinking number of young women and the trend toward marrying and having children later. The average age of mothers at their first birth was 31.0. Marriages rose for the second year in a row to 489,119, but they remained well below the 2019 level of about 599,000.

5Deaths totaled 1,589,489, the first decrease in five years. Even so, deaths exceeded births by 918,253, marking the 19th straight year of natural population decline. The government set up a Population Strategy Headquarters in November 2025 to coordinate its response.

本文の deaths exceeded births by 918,253, marking the 19th straight year of natural population decline.
