Late-Night Phone Use Common Among Teens, Study Shows
1Teenagers in the United States spent about 50 minutes on their smartphones late at night before school days, a new study found. The study was published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics on May 18, 2026. The researchers examined phone use from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights, a window chosen to allow for the recommended eight to 10 hours of sleep.
2The data came from 657 teenagers in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a large U.S. research project. Their average age was 15.3. Instead of asking teens to report their own habits, the researchers used an app that automatically logged which apps were open on the screen. The data was collected between September 2022 and May 2024.
3Social media apps such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok accounted for about 32.7 minutes, or more than 65 percent, of nighttime use. Entertainment apps averaged 8.5 minutes, and games averaged 7.6 minutes. Use varied widely, with about a quarter of the teens spending more than 71.8 minutes while many used their phones very little. Just over half of the teens, 342 in total, used their phones between midnight and 4 a.m. at least once.
4The study had several limitations. It did not measure sleep directly, and it included only Android users. It also cannot show whether phone use causes poor sleep. Still, the authors pointed to earlier research linking just 10 to 15 extra minutes of sleep to better thinking and mental health.
5The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using devices around bedtime because they can disturb sleep. The authors said future studies should examine how the timing of phone use and the type of app affect sleep and school performance.

本文の a window chosen to allow for ...(~のために選ばれた時間帯)や earlier research linking ... to ...(~を…
