Artemis II Crew Sets a New Distance Record and Comes Home

1Four astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego on April 10, 2026, ending NASA's Artemis II mission around the Moon. Before this flight, no crew had flown to the Moon for more than 50 years. Recovery teams took the crew to a U.S. Navy ship, the USS John P. Murtha, for medical checks.

2The crew included NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. Koch became the first woman to fly around the Moon. Glover became the first person of color to do so, and Hansen became the first non-American.

3The astronauts lifted off on April 1 on NASA's Space Launch System rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On April 6, they broke the distance record set by Apollo 13 in 1970, which was about 400,000 kilometers from Earth. At their farthest point, they were roughly 406,000 kilometers away, farther than any humans have ever traveled.

4During the flyby, the crew spent more than six hours studying and photographing the lunar surface. They saw parts of the Moon's far side that no human had seen directly before. Radio contact with Earth was cut for about 40 minutes. During that time, the spacecraft was behind the Moon. The crew also watched a solar eclipse as the Moon passed in front of the Sun.

5Artemis II was a crewed test flight for NASA's Orion spacecraft. On Artemis III, planned for 2027, NASA will test commercial Moon landers in orbit around Earth. NASA plans to land astronauts on the Moon on the next mission, Artemis IV. The landers are being built to carry astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028.
