Japan Claims a Third Asian Crown Before a Record Crowd

1Japan won the AFC Women's Asian Cup for the third time on March 21, 2026, beating host nation Australia 1-0 in the final at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Nadeshiko Japan's earlier titles came in 2014 and 2018, and both of those finals were also against Australia. The result made Japan Asian champions for the first time since 2018.

2The match kicked off at 8 p.m. local time. Maika Hamano scored the winning goal in the 17th minute. After a pass from Yui Hasegawa, she turned sharply outside the penalty area and hit a shot from long range into the bottom right corner. Japan held on to the lead for the rest of the match.

3The final drew 74,397 fans, a record for the competition. A new attendance record was set three times during the tournament. Total attendance over the 21 days passed 350,000, the highest in the event's history.

4Japan reached the final by defeating South Korea 4-1 in the semifinals. Riko Ueki finished as the tournament's top scorer with six goals. Ayaka Yamashita was named the best goalkeeper. Yamashita was also part of the Japan squad that won the title in 2018. Australia's Alanna Kennedy received the award for most valuable player.

5The team is coached by Nils Nielsen. Earlier in the tournament, Japan had already qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. Japan secured that place with a win over the Philippines on March 16. It will be Japan's 10th straight appearance at the Women's World Cup.

全文訳
