Venezuela Beats the U.S. for Its First WBC Title

1Venezuela won its first World Baseball Classic title on March 17, 2026, beating the United States 3-2 in the final. The United States finished as runner-up for the second straight tournament. In the semifinals, Venezuela had beaten Italy 4-2, and the U.S. had defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1.

2Venezuela held a 2-0 lead going into the eighth inning. Bryce Harper then tied the game with a two-run home run for the Americans. In the top of the ninth, Eugenio Suárez hit a double that put Venezuela ahead again. Daniel Palencia closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth.

3Venezuela's path to the final went through Japan, the defending champion. In the quarterfinals on March 14, Venezuela came back from a 5-2 deficit to beat Japan 8-5 at loanDepot park in Miami. Wilyer Abreu hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to give Venezuela the lead for good. Shohei Ohtani homered in the first inning for his third home run of the tournament, but he also made the final out.

4The loss ended Japan's 11-game winning streak in the WBC. Japan had not lost a WBC game since the semifinals in 2017. Ohtani had been named the most valuable player when Japan won the previous tournament in 2023.

5The win over Japan also earned Venezuela a spot in the six-team baseball tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The United States and the Dominican Republic also qualified.
