New Cells for Parkinson's Disease
1Japan has approved a new treatment for Parkinson's disease made from iPS cells. It is one of the first medical products in the world made from iPS cells. The approval was announced in March 2026.
2Parkinson's disease makes it hard for people to move their bodies. The disease kills special cells in the brain. These cells make dopamine, a chemical that helps us move. About 10 million people around the world have the disease.
3iPS cells can grow into many kinds of cells. Scientists changed them into new dopamine cells. Doctors then put the new cells into the patients' brains.
4Kyoto University Hospital tested the treatment on seven patients. Doctors found no serious problems over two years, and four patients got better. The approval is only for a limited time, so the company must collect more data. Patients in Japan may get the treatment as early as summer 2026.
