Finders Keepers: A 6.03-Carat Diamond Turns Up in Arkansas

1Two gem hunters have found a 6.03-carat yellow diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. Park staff confirmed the stone's weight and color on February 6, 2026. Park officials said it is the fourth-largest yellow diamond and the 22nd-largest diamond of any color registered since the site became a state park in 1972.

2The park is a former diamond mine. Long ago, volcanic activity carried diamonds up from deep underground. Visitors pay a fee to search a large field, and under park rules, they can keep whatever they find. Most of the 400 to 800 diamonds found there each year weigh only about a quarter of a carat.

3The two friends, one from Arkansas and one from Wisconsin, made the discovery on January 25 while sorting gravel they had dug up in late December. One of them was livestreaming on social media when the stone appeared. He has searched at the park since 2013 and has found more than 300 gems there. A local TV station reported that the diamond is about the size of a gumdrop.

4Estimates of the diamond's value vary widely. The finder said collectors told him it could be worth up to 1 million dollars. However, an experienced appraiser told The Associated Press that a stone of this size and quality might sell for about 250,000 dollars.

5The park's record is far larger. In 1924, a 40.23-carat diamond nicknamed Uncle Sam was found there, and it is still the largest diamond ever discovered in the United States. In October 2026, the finder said he hoped to sell the 6.03-carat stone and planned to split the money with his friend.

文法ポイント:複合関係代名詞 whatever(~するものは何でも)

本文の they can keep whatever they find は「見つけたものは何でも持っていてよい」。
