Merriam-Webster Names Slop Its Word of the Year

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1Merriam-Webster named slop its Word of the Year for 2025 on December 15. In its newest sense, slop refers to cheap, poor-quality material online, much of it churned out in bulk by AI tools. The choice by the American dictionary publisher reflects a year in which such content spread widely online.

2Editors picked the word after studying data on words that were rising in searches and use. Lookups of slop rose sharply as AI-made videos, images and books spread across the internet. Examples ranged from absurd videos to fake news stories that looked real.

3The word itself is centuries old. In the 1700s, slop meant soft mud. Over time, it came to mean anything of little value. The word still brings to mind pigs eating at a trough.

4Greg Barlow, the president of Merriam-Webster, listed odd advertising images and junky digital books written by AI as other examples. He said the jump in searches suggests that people want something real and genuine. He also called slop a defiant word that pushes back against the idea of AI replacing human creativity.

5Other words on the dictionary's 2025 list included touch grass, a phrase that tells people to step away from their screens. The viral phrase 6-7 and the 45-letter name of a lake in Massachusetts also made the list. Performative, conclave and tariffs were also among the top words of the year. In 2024, Merriam-Webster chose polarization.

performative(見せかけの)、conclave(教皇選挙)、tariffs(関税)も、この年の上位の言葉に入りました。2024年にメリアム・ウェブスターが選んだのは polarization(分断)でした。

文法ポイント:come to + 動詞の原形(~するようになる)

時間がたって状態が変わったことを表す。本文の it came to mean anything of little value(価値の低いもの全般を意味するようになった)がその例。
