Australia Becomes the First Country to Ban Social Media for Under-16s
1Australia has become the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from major social media platforms. The law took effect on December 10, 2025. From that day, hundreds of thousands of Australian teenagers began losing their accounts.
2The law sets a minimum age of 16 for ten platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit, X, Twitch and Kick. Services such as WhatsApp, Pinterest, and Roblox were left off the list, although the government says the list could change. On YouTube, users under 16 are signed out and lose features that require an account, such as saved playlists.
3The responsibility falls on the tech companies, not on families. Neither children nor parents are punished for breaking the rule. Instead, a platform that fails to take reasonable steps to remove underage users can be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars, or roughly 33 million US dollars. To figure out who is old enough, some companies estimate ages from selfies using AI, while others let users prove their age with a government ID.
4Supporters, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, argue that the law will protect young people from harmful content and from bullies and scammers online. Critics see it differently. YouTube has called the law rushed, warning that teens might move to less safe corners of the internet. Even the government admits that the system will not be perfect at first.
5Other governments are watching the results. Malaysia plans a similar ban from 2026, and Denmark, France and New Zealand have shown interest in their own age limits. In Australia, the online safety regulator said it would ask the platforms every month for six months how many accounts they had removed.

Australia has become the first country ...(世界初の国になった=今もそうである)や Malaysia has announced a similar ban
