1Australia has stopped children under 16 from having accounts on big social media sites. The new law started on December 10, 2025. Many teenagers in Australia began to lose their accounts that day.

2Under the law, children under 16 cannot have their own accounts. The ban includes TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and X. Apps like WhatsApp and Roblox are not part of the ban.

3The companies must follow the rules, not the children or their parents. A company can be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars. Some companies check ages with selfies or ID cards.

4The government said the law will protect kids from bullying and other online dangers. But some people think teenagers will find ways around it. Malaysia is planning a similar ban for children under 16.

全文訳

1オーストラリアが、16歳未満の子どもが大きなSNSでアカウントを持つことを禁止しました。新しい法律は2025年12月10日に始まりました。その日から、オーストラリアのたくさんの10代がアカウントを失い始めました。

2この法律では、16歳未満の子どもは自分のアカウントを持つことができません。禁止の対象には、TikTok、Instagram、YouTube、Snapchat、Xなどが含まれます。WhatsAppやRobloxのようなアプリは、禁止の対象ではありません。

3ルールを守らなければならないのは、子どもや親ではなく会社のほうです。会社は最大で4950万オーストラリアドルの罰金を科されることがあります。自撮り写真や身分証明書で年齢を確かめる会社もあります。

4政府は、この法律がいじめやネット上のほかの危険から子どもを守ると言いました。でも、10代はうまく抜け道を見つけるだろうと考える人もいます。マレーシアも、16歳未満の子どもを対象にした同じような禁止を計画しています。

文法ポイント：助動詞 can / cannot ＋ 受け身

can は「～できる・～することがある」。children cannot have accounts（アカウントを持てない）のほか、A company can be fined（罰金を科されることがある）のように can ＋ be ＋ 過去分詞で「～されうる」も表せる。
