Ohtani Is Named MVP for a Fourth Time

1Shohei Ohtani was named the National League's Most Valuable Player for 2025 on November 13, U.S. time. All 30 voters from the Baseball Writers' Association of America ranked him first. It was his fourth MVP award and his third in a row.

2At the plate, Ohtani hit 55 home runs and drove in 102 runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He batted .282 and led the National League with an OPS of 1.014. OPS is a number that combines how often a hitter gets on base with how much power he shows. He also scored 146 runs, more than any other player in the major leagues.

3The season also marked his return as a pitcher. Ohtani had not pitched in a major league game for about a season and a half because of an elbow injury. He came back in June and slowly increased his workload. By the end of the regular season, he had struck out 62 batters in 47 innings with a 2.87 ERA.

4In a playoff game on October 17, Ohtani hit three home runs and also struck out 10 batters in six innings. That win sent the Dodgers to the World Series, which they went on to win.

5Ohtani is now one of only two players with four or more MVP awards. The other is Barry Bonds, who won seven. All four of Ohtani's awards were decided unanimously, and no other player has won the award unanimously more than once. He won twice in the American League, in 2021 and 2023, and twice in the National League, in 2024 and 2025. Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies, who hit 56 home runs, finished second in the voting.

Ohtani had not pitched ... for about a season and a half By the end of the regular season, he had struck out 62 batters
