The Grand Egyptian Museum Opens in Full, with a Little Help from Japan
1Egypt officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids of Giza on November 1, 2025. Kings, presidents and prime ministers from many countries were expected at the opening ceremony. The museum opened to the public on November 4. It cost about one billion dollars and has 24,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space, which is larger than three soccer fields.
2The main attraction is the collection of King Tutankhamun. About 5,000 objects from his tomb are displayed together in two halls. It is the first time the full collection has been shown since his tomb was discovered in 1922. Many of the museum's pieces were moved from the older Egyptian Museum in central Cairo.
3The project took a long time to complete. The idea dates back to the 1990s, and construction began in 2005. Work was later slowed by political instability. Most of the galleries opened to visitors in October 2024, but without Tutankhamun's treasures. A full opening planned for July 2025 was then postponed to November because of tensions in the region.
4Japan has supported the museum since 2006. The Japan International Cooperation Agency, known as JICA, provided two low-interest loans for construction. Starting in 2008, about 90 Japanese experts worked with Egyptian staff to restore and safely move 72 artifacts, including some from Tutankhamun's tomb. A team led by Japanese archaeologist Sakuji Yoshimura also dug up nearly 1,700 wooden pieces of an ancient royal boat buried beside the Great Pyramid.
5Egypt hopes the museum will attract many more visitors. The country welcomed a record 15.7 million tourists in 2024.

the full collection has been shown は has been + 過去分詞 で「(これまでに)公開された」という完了形の受け身。
