A Message in a Bottle Reaches Families After 109 Years
1A family cleaning up a beach in Western Australia found a message in a bottle written by two soldiers in 1916. The family spotted the thick glass bottle just above the waterline at Wharton Beach, near the town of Esperance, on October 9, 2025. They regularly ride along the beach to collect trash.
2Inside were two letters written in pencil and dated August 15, 1916. The writers were two Australian privates sailing on a troopship that had left Adelaide three days earlier. They were on their way to join the fighting on the Western Front in Europe during World War I.
3One soldier wrote to his mother and said he was as happy as Larry, an Australian expression meaning very happy. He also said the food on board was good, even though the ship was rolling in rough seas. The other soldier said the finder could keep his note and wished them good health.
4An oceanographer at the University of Western Australia said the bottle probably washed ashore within weeks of being thrown into the sea. He said it was then likely buried in the sand dunes for more than a century until large waves recently wore the sand away. That would explain why the paper was damp but still readable.
5The family tracked down relatives of both men, who said they were stunned by the find. One soldier was killed in action in France in 1917. The other survived the war and died in Adelaide in 1934.

A family cleaning up a beach(海岸をそうじしている家族)は現在分詞、a message in a bottle written by two soldiers(2人の兵士によって書かれたボトルメール)は過去分詞。
