Two Nobel Prizes for Japan

1Two Japanese scientists won Nobel Prizes in October 2025. Shimon Sakaguchi of Osaka University won the prize in physiology or medicine on October 6. Two days later, Susumu Kitagawa of Kyoto University won the prize in chemistry. Both scientists were 74 years old.

2Our immune system protects the body from germs. But sometimes it attacks the body by mistake. Sakaguchi found special cells that stop these attacks. They are called regulatory T cells.

3Kitagawa helped create new materials called metal-organic frameworks. They are crystals with many tiny spaces inside. Gases can move in and out of the spaces. Scientists hope to use them to collect water from dry desert air.

4Each prize was shared by three scientists. The prizes will be given out in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 10.

They are called regulatory T cells.(~と呼ばれる)や Each prize was shared by three scientists.
