1Merriam-Webster announced on September 25, 2025, that it would publish the 12th edition of its Collegiate Dictionary. It is the first update to the printed book in 22 years. The new edition, which went on sale on November 18, adds more than 5,000 words and over 20,000 new examples of how words are used.

2Among the additions are slang terms such as rizz. Rizz refers to a person's charm or ability to attract others. Oxford University Press had already named rizz its Word of the Year in 2023. Other new entries include dad bod, doomscroll, side-eye, cold brew and WFH, short for working from home.

3Some entries come from science and technology. Petrichor is the pleasant smell in the air when rain ends a spell of warm, dry weather. A teraflop is a unit used to rate the speed of a computer, and a dumbphone is a basic mobile phone like those used before smartphones. A ghost kitchen is a commercial kitchen that businesses rent to prepare food.

4To make room, the editors cut two sections that gave short facts about famous people and places. They also dropped the rarely used word enwheel. The finished book weighs nearly five pounds, or around 2.3 kilograms.

5Experts interviewed by the Associated Press said printed dictionaries still have value. They said print helps preserve languages that have never been recorded, and that paper dictionaries help students at schools that ban phones. The previous edition came out in 2003.
